Return to the Green

Return to the Green

Return to the Green is held each March, on the Sunday prior to St. Patrick’s Day. This Irish festival and one-day event is set in historic Falls Park against the backdrop of the Reedy River. The celebration includes traditional Celtic music, bagpipes, dance, Irish food, drinks and a variety of children’s activities. Wear green and bring the entire family.
Greenville’s St. Baldrick’s will also be held in conjunction with the family celebration of Irish culture.
Men, women and children go bald in solidarity with kids who typically lose their hair during cancer treatment. The shavees solicit donations for their willingness to lose their hair for a good cause. All funds go to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, supporting childhood cancer research.
Last year’s event raised about $50,000 in Greenville, and the Foundations hopes to double that amount this year.

Mice on Main Street

Februar 9, 2009

mouse2Nine hidden little bronze mice are a special attraction for children and a sort of scavenger hunt on downtown Greenville’s main street. Children of all ages are invited to search for these mice, which are hidden on both sides along a nine-block stretch of Main Street between the Hyatt & the Westin Poinsett hotels. Mother Maggie, father Marvin, Marvin Jr., Marcley, Millie, Mitch, Melissa, Millfin and Miles are all placed on or above ground level. To find the mice you can get the ‚Mice of Main‘ book or a list of clues. The adorable list with cute little mouse illustrations will be the mark of a ‚mission accomplished‘ for younger kids. This wonderful idea was a school project of a local high school student, Jim Ryan, and is based on the popular children’s book ‚Goodnight Moon‘.
A bronze version of this favorite book, and the first mouse, Mr. Mickey, are mounted on the fountain in front of the Hyatt Regency hotel.

The membership-based, nonprofit organization ‚Upstate Forever‘ recently celebrated their move into a new home, a renovated building in the historic Pettigrue district of Greenville.

The former single family residence, built in 1916, had been vacant for over twenty years and had badly deteriorated. Upstate Forever acquired it in 2007, renovated and remodeled it by adhering to basic principles of sustainability, to reuse a building which already has been build, reusing existing materials, using recycled materials and energy efficient systems.
The new office will be certified under the Earthcraft and Leadership in Energy Enviromental Design (LEED) programs.
The restored and remodeled ‚green‘ office building is located at 507 Pettigrue Street.

If you need more information about Green Building, please call us or send an email.

Farmers Hall

November 14, 2008

pendleton

The historic Farmers Hall Society building was built in 1826
in the  Greek revival style.
This beautiful building is located on the southwest corner of the village green in downtown Pendleton.
It was planned as the District’s Court House, but the seat of government was moved before the building was completed.
The local farmers completed the building as the Farmer’s Hall Society building, and it has been in use by this organization ever since.
It is the oldest Farmers Hall still in continuous use in the US and Pendleton’s beautiful centerpiece.
The first floor was used as the U.S. Post Office and the second floor
as the meeting hall. Today a distinguished restaurant is located
on the first floor.
The Guard House, in the background was build in 1860 on the
former old town jail and serves as the magistrate’s office.

Pendelton Townsquare will host the event ‚Upstate Old Fashioned Children’s Games‘ on 11/1/08 and ‚European Art & Music Fair on 11/8/08. Please find more information about both events at: events

The Blue Ridge Parkway

Oktober 2, 2008

Blue Ridge Parkway

Blue Ridge Parkway

Blue Ridge Parkway was originally called the ‚Appalachian Scenic Highway‘. The project of the „Blue Ridge Parkway“ placed under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service, started in 1935 and took over fifty-two years to complete. It runs from the southern terminus of Shenandoah National Park’s Skyline Drive in Virginia  to U.S. Route 441 at Oconaluftee in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park near Cherokee, North Carolina.
The Parkway has no direct interchanges with interstate highways, offers overlook and picnic areas, and commercial vehicles are prohibited. The roadway is not maintained during the wintertime and several sections which pass over higher elevations are often impassable and therefore closed from late fall to early spring.
Because the lush Blue Ridge Mountain range puts on one of the longest-running leaf color displays in the country, October is the month to enjoying nature’s grand show and the numerous events and art festivals in the Blue Ridge Mountains and in our area.
